hey, I have a 2000 tacoma and also a technician. the timing belt should be changed every 80,000 miles or 5 years. I have both and about to do it. It will probly run you like $600.

Thanks for the info. If you get the final cost let me know. I've heard some places charge about $450 and others about $800. All over the place!

Also, is there any indication of when a timing belt is going bad?

Most dealers send out a flyer every few months. They sometimes list timing belt replacement costs.
Some examples I found are:

http://www.donmcgilltoyota.com/Parts...onmcgilltoyota

http://www.cavendertoyota.com/PartsA...cavendertoyota

http://www.performancetoyotamem.com/...s-Service.aspx

Shop rates will vary and most shops will probably suggest water pump replacement.

There is no easy way to tell your timing belt is bad so most vehicle maintenance schedules have mileage or time replacement of timing belts. If a belt does break it can cause severe damage be very expensive on some engines.

My 96 Tacoma has a timing chain with the 2.7 liter, you vitually never change it, i'm coming up on 200K and will be trading up soon, I think I'll stay with the 4 cyl if it still has the chain. athough the 4.0 L 6 looks attractive also
