I need help

Today i went to check out and Nissan Skyline R30 from 1985. The owner is selling it to me for 30,000baht or 750USD...very very cheap. However...there are some problems with this car. First the roof had rust in them so the current owner cut the old roof off and replace it with a new one from the scrap yard. another one is with the passenger side's floor, rust too and he did the same thing, cut it out and replace with a new one from the scrap yard (this is a RHD car so te passenger side is on the left). Then the rest of the car where ther are hole are filled with plaster.


I am wondering how would these problems effect the car? would the car stiffness drop? is it safe to drive at all!? because i am going to do an engine swap for sure...and the engine i am looking at are all 200+hp engine. so please all expert out there educate me

it depends on the amount of work you want to invest in the car. You could get this car for next to nothing and put a lot of money and effort into it and end up w/ a sweet car.....or you could look around more and find a Skyline that's in better shape and pay more for it. I don't think that the work the previous owner did is really going to affect a lot fo the performance or safety....

Generally, you want to get the best, most solid car you can afford. Fixing a cheap rust-bucket is usally more expensive in the long run than starting out with a rust free car.

As for the work already done, the roof is a vital structural component. If the welding and metal work was properly done, you should be fine. However, who is realistically going to take the time and effort required for a 20 year old rusty car? Be very cautious of the old work that was done.

As for the other holes filled with plaster??? It depends on where they are. Some parts are more structurally important than others. Holes in the fenders or rear quarter panels is not too bad. Holes in the chassis torque boxes is very bad.
However, properly installed and finished welded patches (not just plaster) take a lot of time, skill and effort to install properly.

Can you find a better car that would take less effort to fix? That may be a better buy in the long run.
