97 PONTIAC SUNFIRE 2.2 L OHV 104k miles. I was driving about 20mph and heard a very light pop and the engine quit running and wouldn't start. Towed it home and checked compression #1 =30 PSI, #2 =0 PSI, #3 =0 psi, #4 =30 psi. Removed valve cover and the valve train doesn't turn when cranking the engine. Is this a zero clearance engine with the possibility of bent valves. I would hate to put a lot of energy and money in the car. Since I have known it it has always ticked, but from what I have heard from other cars and people this is almost normal for these engines. Any ideas about how long, how much PITA, and cost it runs to replace the timeing chain. What else may have been taken out?

Re: broken timing chain = bent valves? 2.2L OHV
yep, bent valves, not clearanced for valves in pistons. J-yard head and if you didn't punch a piston you should just need a timing chain kit. you punch a piston, either swap out the motor, or buy a reman or used one. less work to replace than to rebuild the whole motor.
the timing chain is not normal on a 2.2L on the 2.3L and 2.4L it's more common, the 2.2L uses a chain similar to the unit on a SBC. the others are long chains to reach from the crank to the heads.

I have a 96 sunfire se, I'm not sure of the engine size, but are all sunfire engine interferance engines. My car has 108000 on it and I don't have any timing chain noise, but is something I should get replaced. I was told it's not a belt, but a chain.

Re: broken timing chain = bent valves? 2.2L OHV
yep, well, not mine anymore, I swapped in a HO 2.3L and it has the notched pistons, JUST in case.
