Alternator Question!

I was just wondering, I saw some alternators on eBay specifically for a 92 Buick Park Avenue, and other years as well. Ok - they are 180, 200, 220, 240, and 300 amp alternators! Also says it has 120 amps at idle, some say 145 amps at idle. They are a pretty penny. Just replaced mine, but was wondering if this is something I could do.

Does a 105 and a 140 amp alt. have the same mounting pattern? Meaning do they hook up to the engine the same way?

Are there any possible overloads with using a high output alt? And if so what precautions do you take?

They are Iraggi alt's that say delco series with the ad. Thanks!

What are you planning to do now, put a 1500 W amp in the trunk with four 12" speakers?


Those alts are based on the CS144 AC Delco, the same as the 140 amp unit used on police package and heated windshield cars. The internals are beefed up to get even higher amps. The mounts are the same as the 105 amp if for the same car and engine size. All are designed to charge up to the regulated 12V + controlled by the internal regulator. You would have to upgrade the wire from the alternator to a 4-gage; otherwise it could overload the existing wire.

Think of an alternator as a battery charger like your home unit. Some have settings for, 10 amps, 40 amps, & 100 amps with a 200 amp boost. The higher the amp charge, the quicker the battery charges and also the wires get hotter.

LOL! I love my truck space! I was wondering because of all the short distances I drive! I messed up and said does the 105 amp mount the same as a 140 amp, what I meant was does a 200 amp mount the same as a 140 amp! I was tired for sure. Sorry about that! I just put that 140 amp delco in that you suggested and it works great, better than the 105! I still see a slight movement in the gauge needle when the turn signals are on with no electrical loads at all, it not as bad as having that 105 amp in there though. I was thinking since the 140 amp made it so much better, why not 200 amp? Well if its going to get the wires hot forget it, I just see nightmares if something failed! Thanks for clearing my head there! I need to start another thread, think I may have gotten closer to why turn signals make elec. gauge move. Thanks again!

Hey Cntrybst,

This topic get's me charged up! I talk alot on my cb in my mobile.
So I have added a 165 A Neece Leville. It's not a standard alt.,
besides for the higher apmerage, you can adjust the voltage
from 13Vdc to 20Vdc. I did have to make a view mods, but it
worked out great!!!! I run a 1600 W amp in the trunk with two
1000cca batteries hooked up to alt..check out

'RADAR'S POWERPLANT"

If my engine didn't appear type "radar's powerplant" in search box.

Thanks for information. I am just trying to keep my volt gauge from moving alittle back and forth when the turn signals on with the ac on auto. I don't want to modify anything! I could not imagine needing the extra power as you have. Anyways, thanks for your imput!

Re: Alternator Question!

I've noticed my alt gauge reading different. When I first start it - it reads about 8/9 volts, after about 6 to 10 seconds it then moves to 14/15 volt area quickly. ??? The ac is on auto and so are the headlights so when I start it they are on. I am currently having problems with code 41 which is affecting my idle. Do I need to worry about my alt till I get my code taken care of? Is this normal to get readings like this if I have code problems? Thanks!
