Quick car under 6000

I have been reading all of the other what to buy car things and none seem to fit exactly what im looking for sorry for another one of these posts. I have around 6000$ to spend i have been saving up for a year and a half im almost 18. I need a car that is fast in stock form with little engine modifications. I want something that is a 4 cylindar I like the gas milage those cars get lol. And I want something I can make look cool and reasonably fast at the same time I have been looking at mostly as of late gs-r integra's, 240sx but I dont want to do that tedious engine swap that comes with them, Eclipse gs-t 2nd gen, Preludes vtec. which one of is there something im missing i can get for under 6 grande

Re: Quick car under 6000

A mid-90's Integra GS-R fits your needs just fine, but it could be tough to find in good shape for under six grand - they're in pretty high demand. A Nissan 200SX SE-R, or even the older Sentra SE-R coupe, would work fine too. They're harder to find than Integras, but also cheaper, just as reliable, a little better on gas, and arguably more fun to drive.

Re: Quick car under 6000

a 4th gen maxima should be in that price range. 190 hp 205 ft-lbs of tq and only 2900 lbs(w/5 speed) in a car like that makes for a real nice sleeper. plus there's a pretty large aftermarket for them too.

Re: Quick car under 6000

hah good luck trying to fit 4 normal sized people in an eclipse, or a 240sx for that matter. oh and that "tedious engine" swap on a 240? its about as easy a swap as there is in this WORLD. you dont have to do it though. a stock SOHC 12valve 240sx will smoke a 2000 civic SI(lots of people will talk shit here but ive done it several times). and if you dont want to leave it stock, one guy in the 240 forum has a completely stock DOHC 240sx with a turbo and has 326 whp @ 12lbs of boost. runs 13.3, with 140,000 miles on it. truck engine my ass.

id suggest an integra, or...b14 200sx SE-R, b13 sentra SE-R, B14 sentra SE 2.0, they are underrated, very buildable, very safe and reliable, and best of all, underpriced. they dont hold resale even close to what hondas do so you can get a 1995 200sx SE-R for like 3k, and buy a turbo kit with the other 3k. bam. VERY reliable 200whp rocket. oh and sentras and 200sx will fit 4 people better than any other compact.
it was my first car so i do have sort of a soft spot, but it is justified, as it never let me down.

240SX's are pretty cheap to insure too... more money for other stuff. I think I've read that Integras are one of the most stolen cars throughout Canada and the U.S. so I'd expect insurance there to be pretty high.

Re: Quick car under 6000

Go with the Maxima, you wont regret it. Mine only has 160HP(3rd gen) but it uses everyone of them. And you'd be surprised at how quick it is.

Cheap and Fast won't be reliable

I guess it also depends on what you consider "fast", For a stock car, I would consider anything running mid 15s or under being fast. If you agree with me here, then an integra GS-R and an Eclipse GS-T are good options if you want something that looks pretty sporty. But if you don't mind doin an engine swap, I would suggest an early 90s civic hatch or CRX with a B series swap

Re: Quick car under 6000

It would be hard to find a Integra GSR or VTEC Prelude under $6k in decent condition. The S13 240sx is a good bet. You can find them really cheap and the stock KA24 is actually a good engine to run boost on. A stock 240 will not smoke an Si, the stock 240 is pretty slow. If it came down to driver skill, a 240 could beat an Si though. I have 2 friends (one with an Si and one with a 240, Si won every time, even when they switched cars- not by much though).

Haha, good post. The top of the post I agree with completely, but any engine swap brings forth many headaches if its something you've never done, and the cost will force you to start out with a beater. I agree that a Maxima would be a great car for an 18yr old who wants a real back seat. My first thought for a fast car under 6 grand and I believe to be the fastest car available for that money is a 4th gen F-body (Z28 or Trans Am) but you sound like you're looking for something Japanese and any 93+ FBody you find for that money will have lived a rough life. Honestly, now that I look back on my late teens/early 20's, I would love to have had a Maxima. Great power, very reliable, lots of room, just enough luxury, and generally very practical. I'd either have that or get a 3000 dollar VW Golf and put a supercharger on it. Or you could get a 92+ BMW 325i and just leave it alone but don't drag race anyone, lots of fun to drive. Don't rule out the krautmobiles!
