Melted vacuum hose destination
I just got done putting a co-worker's 1995 Contour with the 2.5L back together from replacing the alternator, valve cover gaskets, and upper intake gaskets. In the process of putting the upper intake on, I came across a vacuum hose that has melted and I cannot determine where the other end should go. The one end and the melted end are circled in the picture at http://www.members.aol.com/Rod241473...Stuff/hose.jpg
She's recently moved here to Iowa from Texas and has mentioned that the car doesn't like to run when it's cold. While I had the upper intake off, I cleaned the carbon sludge from the intake as well as the throttle plate and IAC. I also checked all 6 plugs and wires. It appears they haven't been on the car for a horribly long time and I didn't see a reason to change them. She is right though, the car doesn't like to run when it's cold, and I'm suspecting this melted vacuum line could be the culprit. -Rod

Would someone with the Duratec (preferably a 1995) check the vacuum line that goes to the carbon canister in the rear of the car so see if that's where this hose goes? Anyone gonna have their Contour/Mystique up on jackstands this weekend?

I dont have a 1995 and that line doesnt look familiar. I suggest posting over in the troubleshooting over on contour.org.

Well, I took another look at the Contour. I discovered that when she starts the car, the vacuum secondaries don't change. It appears that either the vacuum servo has a hole in the diaphragm or there is no vacuum to it. When I had the intake off, I did operate the linkage to make sure the plates were clean, so I know it's not seized. I didn't however hook a vacuum pump to it and see if it would operate and hold vacuum.
With the car idling I removed the vacuum line from the EGR valve and pulled a vacuum on it. It held vacuum, but had absolutely no effect on the idle of the car. The engine was up to temp though, but I believe the EGR should still be closed at idle, even on a warm engine. So, I figure I'll be pulling the intake again and chasing vacuum for the secondaries, at which time I'll pull the coil packs and try to find a home for the melted vacuum hose. -Rod
