Unhappy 99 suburban how do you turn off headlights?

Does anyone know how (or if it's even possible) to turn off the headlghts on a 99 suburban? If they are off, then the running lights turn on. This time off year I get some nasty looks while taking the family through a holidays lights tour and I can't turn them off???? manual no help.

slightly push your parking brake down, your day time runing lights will go out.note the brake light on your dash will come on. this is normal in that mode.
