Question 88 740i How reliable of a car will this be?

Hello all,

I'm considering the purchase of an 88 740i from a local Doctor. He has spent 1000's in preventative maintenance and proactive parts replacement. Work has always been done by BMW Dealer. How reliable are these cars it has a 6 cylinder engine. What kind of gas milage can I expect? The car has about 140,000 miles. How many more miles will she go?

I will look forward to your responses,
Thank you,
DT

I bought a 89 735iL with ~130k miles this past spring that had been sitting idle for about an year. The car has given no trouble at all. Yes I did invest some money in tires/brakes/alternator...and will be working on the starter soon, but apart for that and a good tuneup, the car runs like a champ. I get about 16.7 - 18 hwy mileage and 15-16 city. If the car you are looking at has gone through all the preventative maintenance you should be good to go. Make sure that service 2 (or something similar which replaces/adjusts the timing belt) has been done on the car..otherwise it could cost you a bit of money down the road. Good luck!
