cheap offroading truck. but also gets good gas mileage.
well since driving my friends 1985 chevy 3/4 ton camper special (with the manual tranny!) ive been wanting one of my own, but im not looking forward to the gas mileage problem. so i sort of want something in between the two. good gas mileage AND good offroadablity.
but im working with a limited budget, as im 16, so at most $1500. (AND NO FORDS!)

Good gas mileage and good off-road ability will not happen. Check out the Toyota pickups maybe or 4 cylinder Jeep. But even then it's still going to probably get less than 20 mpg.

ya not really looking into either of those as of the repair costs. looking for something i can take on dirt roads and light trails but mostly for around town and playing around by my friends house.
ive looked around at toyota pickups and they arnt worth the money to fix any of the ones locally.

You probably won't be able to find anything then. My friends all have fullsize Chevy trucks and K5 Blazers and those are fun as all hell offroad and even on the road with my one friends 3/4 Ton with a ZZ4 350 but none of them get any better than 15 mpg on the highway, and probably close to 8 mpg in town and around 3 or 4 offroad.

Re: cheap offroading truck. but also gets good gas mileage.
what would be nice is an s10 but with a solid front axle. all i need for a truck is it to be able to take some light trails, nothing harder then that up here where i live.

Re: cheap offroading truck. but also gets good gas mileage.
The only time you're really going to need a solid front axle is if you're putting out a lot of horse power...I'm not saying IFS couldn't handle a lot but it's cheaper to swap to and up build a solid front axle set up. If it's just light trails then an S-10 or Sonoma should work just fine. A Dakota would work well too.

well if completely replacing all the body panels and stuff because of rust isnt hard then its a peice of cake. (all the trucks in my price range are in need of lots of parts because of the salt used on the roads here.)

Re: cheap offroading truck. but also gets good gas mileage.
Toyota makes hard little trucks...but your gonna have to buy old to get one as they hold their value quite well (because they are hard little trucks).
My tuck can play and i get 19-20mpg around the ruarl roads, 1 or 2 less in true city driving and 18 on the interstate, 21-22 on 55/60mph high ways. however my truck is a 2000 and was 7,000 about 10 months ago, probably 6,000-6500 for similar now. Its got LSD and a 4.10 stock. 4wd will set you back at least another 500-1000. however mine is TL so if you get your regular B3000 or ranger 3.0 it will probably be about the same because i have the fancy interior and all that jazz. |
