Carrier bearing
Hey fellow toyota crew, I have a 2000 tacoma with a 6" lift and a 3" lift. I got a noise and found out it is my carrier bear and just wondering if anyone else has heard of this or had this problem. Just seeing how much and how hard they were.

Re: Carrier bearing
Are you sure it's caused by a bad carrier bearing?
Did you run the truck with low oil level in the differential? With a lifted truck I would think the front pinion bearing would be subjected to more stress than the carrier bearings. If you are not sure it's the carrier bearings check this website for some tips on checking differential noises. http://www.jawsgear.net/store/catalog/faq.php Clifton |

Yea I am pretty sure its the carrier bearing I put my stethascope on it and thats where it is the loudest. It is definatly not my diff. if I had any second thoughts it would be my output bearing on my transfer case.

Re: Carrier bearing
Carrier bearings usually refer to differential carrier bearings and they*are* in the differential. Could you describe the exact location of the bearing you are calling the carrier bearing?

Yea the carrier bearing is on my driveshaft, I have a 1 to 2 foot driveshaft coming out of my transfer case and them my carrier bearing and then a 4 foot driveshaft. Its an extended cab long bed. I listened to it with the stethascope and it was the loudest when i held it on the bearing

Re: Carrier bearing
The Toyota shop manual calls it a center support bearing. You haven't described the noise, it could be caused by the U joints or cardan joints needing lubrication unless you have already lubricated the fittings. I would try lubrication first, procedure can be found here.
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...tml#driveshaft If that doesn't help you should remove the drive-shaft assembly for a close inspection, you should be able to find the worn/noisy parts. For additional information about drive shafts read this article. http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/driveline/ Clifton |

Re: Re: Carrier bearing
Yes it is also called that but in the shop we call it a carrier bearing, and it is roaring noise like bearings usually do and I have lubercated the u-joints and checked all fluids b/c I change them like every 4 months due to harsh driving on and off road.
