Mercon V Transmission Fluid

Recently had trans rebuilt come to find out shop didnt put mercon v in it.Well after a heated conversation with him he finally says hell change fluid. This is not a pan drop im talkin about a flush and fill with the right fluid. Is there any way i can tell when i get it back if in fact he does put mercon v in it. Is there a color difference or anything. Also wondering if this will make it shift different. Ford tells me if not mercon v it will burn up clutches. THANX DAVE

Re: Mercon V Transmission Fluid

I don't know if I will be able to help, but what year is your truck, and auto/man? I think I've always put in Dexron/Mercon III.

The type of fluid to use after an overhaul, will be determined by the type/brand of components used. If the rebuilder used OEM clutches, then yes the factory recommended fluid is best. But alot of aftermarket mfgs. of clutches/overhaul kits, recommend a different type of fluid. The kits i use, call for Ford type f or fa fluid, even in GM transmissions. I always put a warning tag on the dipstick. It is actually a better fluid that the mercon, especially for high performance use. So dont bitch at the rebuilder too much, he probably knows what kind of fluid he needs to use , for the components he used, and you and ford dont. As far as the color, you probably wont be able to tell the difference. Most are red, except for some of the high performance fluids. The fluid wont make it shift different. If its not shifting right , something else is wrong. Good luck.
