Grinding Sound from under the hood!!
I recently acquired a 2000 grand prix GT with several problems. The one I'm most concerned about is the grinding sound that comes from under the hood. When I start the car and begin to move, the grinding sound begins in short intervals. The sound starts and stops at a pace consistant with the speed of the car. the faster I travel, the faster the intervals. I hear it loudest when moving slowly. Since my knowledge of how a vehicle works is minimal, I wanted your opinion before I take it to a mechanic and get my pockets picked. thanks.

Re: Grinding Sound from under the hood!!
There are several possibilities. First there may be a problem with one of the brakes, bad rotor or caliper. Second, you may have a wheel bearing going bad and that is causing the grinding. Finally, the axle shaft on one side or the other may have a CV joint going bad. I seriously doubt that this has anything to do with the engine or transmission simply because the noise changes with the speed of the car.

I agree with GTPdad, in the same order that he mentioned them.

Re: Grinding Sound from under the hood!!
Thanks for the reply. I will definitely get further informed regarding those parts of the vehicle. It's a relief knowing that it's probably not the engine or transmission. This forum is very helpful.
