Wink BMW M5 Ad

This is from an Ebay auction so I'm not sure how long the picture will last on here but I'll try and find one off of Google.

so what they trying to advertise? That it spins out really fast? Last time i checked that is not a good thing in a car.

Re: BMW M5 Ad

Dude, if it was a spin out, the dog would be against the door.

It's acceleration, man!

(Gotta love the claw marks on the leather)

No you are mistaken. The only way to acheive the resut portrayed in the ad trough centrifugal force would be for the car to spin on its own axis.

And to make real simple here is a picture:

so again the car has to spin, and spinning in a car is not something to advertise since it implies loss of control.

i hope its clear enough now and i won't have to further impose on my fellow AF members by amazing drawing skills.

Re: BMW M5 Ad

You are correct in your analysis of the direction of the centrifugal force applied to the dog. However your reasoning is flawed for one reason: At what RPM would the BMW have to spin to generate the necessary foot pounds (metric countries: Newton-metres) of force to squash the dog into the cushions?

I think the speed of rotation required to generate the necessary force precludes that occurring. Added to that, the instantaneous moment of inertia generated by the initial loss of control would be sufficiently surprising to move the dog to one side of the vehicle or the other. (I know that from experience)

Re: BMW M5 Ad

However I agree with your discussion that the ad needs to change from "Centrifugal" to some other descriptor for the forces applied to said Beagle, in order to portray a better image.

-edit-
Of course, the "BMW shuffle" is well known.

Do i look like I am mentally retarted not to be aware of that. I'm quite aware of the fact that the add is nothing more than an allegory using a clear imposible exageration to represent bmw's acceleration.

However by using the word centrifugal force they made the add into "look how fast our car can spin" rather than the "look how fast our car can accelerate".

Retarded? Nay I must say your appearance is not that of a complete dolt. Your drawing skills are of the highest caliber and clearly illustrate the thrust vectors involved in beagle squishing. Additionally sirrah, I must concur with your analysis of the improper usage of centrifugal force by the cretinish ad developers as incorrectly portraying the vehicle's instability and subsequent rapid longitudinal rotation.

(also could be said as, "No, didn't you see my smileys?")

Re: BMW M5 Ad

And after further analysis, I would ask that you please note that the claw marks left by said beagle are, in fact, perfectly straight. Yet another failure of the ad developers to understand basic physics. If the centrifugal force caused the situation, then there would be some curvature of the claw marks due to rotational acceleration prior to the beagle (poor beast) being pressed to, then into the cushions. Since the claw marks are completely straight (as portrayed in the ad) it is painfully clear that either:
1) The BMW was accelerated very slowly so as to provide hardly any rotational acceleration. (however in this case the beagle would have had the time to change positions, and that is clearly not the case)
2) The picture is a result of acceleration
or
3) The damn thing was photoshopped.

-edit- Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that whichever of the 3 cases above apply, the ad developer is a DUMBASS
