Stock Shift Knob Removal

I look around seeing all these nice shift knobs around, and would love to put one in my car versus the stock one. I'm not complaining about the knob now, but it's just that I'd like to modernize a lil bit ya know.

Problem is, I don't know if I can get the dang thing off. Car is a 1984 ST. If it screws off, I'm a weakling

Re: Stock Shift Knob Removal

some screw off...others have a little metal band that screws off, under it is 1-3 small grub screws that hold it in place, undo these with an alan key and away you go.

Re: Stock Shift Knob Removal

Yours should screw off. Most shift knobs you buy now have different size adaptors to fit your car. If you wanna modernize it though. Find a short shift kit first. Your Celica is a couple years older than mine and my shifter looks like a truck shifter it's so big so I can only imagine what yours looks like. you can always do it the cheap way and cut it down however it still doesn't change the distance in which you have to move it to put it in gear. If you're short like me it won't work but a shift knob isn't going to help much when your shifter is still so big. It looks silly...trust me.

Here's a picture of my shift knob.

If that screws off, then it must be on hard as hell

I don't know if a band is there or not, I really need to sit down and stare at it for a few minutes tomorrow maybe.

Re: Stock Shift Knob Removal

91 Gt-s It will be almost impossible to hurt the linkage, I have ripped the whole assembly apart so many times, if you were like a super strong guy the only thing you could do is snap the shift rod.. If you are too nervous to really ream on it, I can send you instructions as to how to remove the whole shift rod and then you can just take it of from there. PM me if you want a copy. They are the instructions I send out with my new short shifters and have the pics and everything so I can just e-mail it to you. Good Luck
