overheating 96 Civic

I have a 96 civic that overheats. Reaches almost to maximum. It overheats on random occasions. I cant work out why. I have changed the coolant a few months ago, and coolant levels havent changed (its not leaking). I noticed that the fan doesnt kick in when it overheats. My brother-in-law changed the two fan switches. Also removed the thermostat leaving only the housing. Still does the same thing. Checked the fuse its ok (has to be because the fan sometimes turns on).

Any ideas?

Its really frustrating and would like to pin point the problem as we all know a damaged head is not cheap to fix

Faulty fan motor maybe

It's probably caused by faulty temp controller. Does it only overheat when you are idling?

I had to replace a bad radiator on mine to stop it from overheat all the time. I did have the occassional overheat whenever the car was idling at the light or traffic.

Thanks for the advice.

It turned out to be a blocked radiator. Had the radiator flushed and its all OK. Did cause minor head damage that turned out to be an expensive fix.
