Angry nonworking horn

Greetings fellow gear heads,
I have a 2000 siliverado LS that has an intermittent horn. Sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. I have tried hitting it while the wheel is turned in different directions with no luck. Does anyone know how to remove the airbag in the center of the wheel without it blowing up. I'm thinking I spilt something that is gumming up the contact. But who knows. Thanx

first check your horn fuse. If that is not it then when you remove the peace to get to it the air bag will pop out, to keep it from doing this you have an air bag fuse. disconect it and it should be good.

Re: nonworking horn

Strange... my sister has a 2000 Suburban and it's horn quit working a while back. Before you go taking everything apart at the wheel, I'd go to the horn itself and check the ground on it. Sounds to me like the horn has vibrated something loose (those things really vibrate when you use them). I never did know what was wrong with my sis's horn, because she lives in another state. The dealer charged her something like $240 to fix it, tho.

Re: nonworking horn

i had this problem and it turned out to be in the steering column. not easy to fix, but there is a round disk in the column that connects the horn pad wiring to the wiring in the column. this round disk has a brass contact area on both sidesof it. for some reason there was no contact between the brass contacts. i soldered in a jumper and now the horn works fine.

Re: nonworking horn

I had the same issue.

Cleaned the contacts on rely in the fuse box under the hood and solved the problem.

IMO, GM use the gayest sounding horns.

I need to get a better sounding horn

Good Luck

I actually installed horns from a 1978 Buick Park Avenue along with one of the Factory horn on the Driver side of the truck. It's awesome, distinct, and LOUD!!! Even my Wife's Impreza had a gay horn, so I installed a set of European Air Horn's, nice and loud too...

About the Horn not working, I don't know if this applies or not but, with my 90' Blazer I had the same problem. So, I pulled the Steering wheel off and found that the pin from the wheel wasn't working with the disc on the Column. The disc on the Column was dirty, cleaned up the disc and it worked fine at every angle.

Just my worth.

Re: nonworking horn

Thanx for all the suggestions,
I did try the fuse and it seems to all be good, so next I'll check contact in the wheel after taking out the air bag and see what kind of contact is going on.

Re: Re: nonworking horn

Jeez,
this horn crap is frustrating-killed the air bag checked out the connections on the ground and everything seems to be making contact. Just when I thought this was dead- I hit it the other day and it worked fine, once the engine was dead the horn was too for now.

Re: nonworking horn

I had the fuse go a few times on me. But it only blew when I had my phone charger pluged in .

What if your horn sounds funny. I believe only one of the horns is blowing.

Re: nonworking horn

does anyone have any knowledge as to whether or not the horns are interchangeable with horns from other GM vehicles from the mid-80's?

Re: nonworking horn

See my post earlier in this thread. I've got horns on my truck from a 78' Buick. Our Stock Horns' are just a 12 Volt out from a stock relay so in theory you should be able to swap any horn in or out. The suckiest part is trying to swap out the Driver's side horn. I think you have to remove the Washer fluid container to get it out and if you just disconnect it then your truck sounds funny with noise just coming from one side of your vehicle...
