weathering a car body
Hi all...there may have been a post about this already and I missed it...But I was wondering how some of you weather your car bodies...Or a good way to weather it...I have one that is very glossy black and I want to tone it down...Give it a slightly dusty or dirty look...Thanks...Matt

Yup it doesn't work!
Not to mention the entire FAQ's needs a good goin' over and stuff up dated. . . I've looked through them a few times and can see how newbies get confused and then ask a godforsaken question, only to be blasted in the forums). Proves to be frustrating and non productive if ya ask me. . . Quote:

This is why I made a mirror of the FAQ on ScaleWiki. (making an up to date version, making it grow a bit and avoid all the link and pictures missing)
The ol' dude tutorial is dead for a while now. He was supposed to make an updated version of it, but I guess he lack some time. Only thing I have about Weathering is Tamiya Paint Weathering Mixes which give you an idea of the color to use, but not the technique

Yeah, it's sad how all those old picture links are broken now. It was better in the old days with the original file attachment system, but I guess that took up too much server space.
For weathering advice do a search through all the aircraft and armour online forums. It's their stock in trade so they're generally much better at it than us automotive types. What I'd suggest is you just use your imagination and have a practice on some scrap. Some example of rallycars I've weathered (or just muddied up) are on my webpage link below. Try techniques like drybrushing, washes, light airbrushing and whatnot. Most important rule of weathering is to remember "less is more" i.e. don't overdo it.

I agree whole heartedly!
Leave no medium untouched and use your imagination! Everyone has their own little "weathering" technique and it's really what works best for you. Pastels seem to be the choice among military modelers, while I've also seen craft paint, water colors (from the tube) to people using actual dirt/ashes to replicate weathering. There are a few other things that you must consider too like, whether or not to seal your efforts with mist of dullcoat and such. There are a ton of websites that have "how to's" on 'em. A good start would be looking up the links section on IPMS's main page and then cruise through the different club websites from there . . . Quote:

Yuppers Freakray! I hear ya but, I guess it come with the territory. . .
Still, I think most over look the efforts of all the moderators who police the boards and many don't realize that it's a volunteer effort in which you and the others do so on your own time. Something to be commended for I would say and speaks highly of your dedication to the hobby! So? ya can't please all of 'em all of the time. . . no big whoop . . . Keep up the good/needed work!
