Trans acting up

1991 explorer with 135k miles on it. When cold starting I have to shift the trans 1. 2.then D only once, then into overdrive after 45 mph. If I drop below 35 mph with it in OD it just revs and goes no where and I need to put it back into D. I only use this thing in winter months so I can live with the shifting. I checked the fluid and it is not a bright red color but more of an orange color. Vacuum modulator looks ok and the vacuum line is connected. Any other things to check?

Sounds like the bands may need to be adjusted. I think you can get that done at a shop for a little more than $100

I have heard from alot of mechanics that flusing trans fluid is very risky at that milage, they usually say that if it wasnt flushed prior to hitting 100K, dont flush, becuase you can do more demage then good.

I have read that flushing out high mileage vehicles will kill your trans on this forum somewhere. So follow that advice!

Re: Trans acting up

dont have the thransmission "flushed" by a machine, but by all means, drop the pan, change the filter, clean out the crud, and add 5 new quarts of fluid. that could help the shifting. things may be worn inside, but you could have a little trash stuck in a valve. ---pressure flushing on a machine could loose up buildup that has centrifuged out and get it stuck inside the valve, drain and refill does not hurt, and very well could help.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I plan to change the fluid, filter and gasket this weekend and will post with results.
