lots of codes

i am working on a 98 civic 1.6 5 speed, i just installed a used engine, but the customer was having these problems befor their motor slung a few rods.

it sets a code 1298 electrical load detector, both of the o2 sensor codes, and when you drive it the speedo doesnout work setting that code. i have had these same exact codes on this same exact kind of car i had to re wire those sensors, or more less bypass the problem by powering up those sensors.

ELD is the first code always? the o2 sensors are geed but they are lacking power from their battery suppley same as speed sensor.

4 codes that are hard codes and they reset for about 1 then its a hard code all over again.

what do yall think? i have tested the eld as much as i can so i am going to try a used part tomorroy if no answer.

its deffently not the ecu. tried it had an old one lying around

what engine? im assuming it is an 96-98 obd2 D series using the original harness.

assuming you are a mechanic with a multimeter:

the ELD CEL could have been triggered from a few wires that can get damaged from the swap. this is why the multimeter comes in handy, because, you can just trace the wires instead of reripping the wires out. besides, its also more accurate this way. for the ELD CEL, you need to first check the eld 3 pin connector in the hot position to see if it is recieving battery voltage. pin #1 (not sure if its 1, but it should be for the 96-98 civics) to a ground source should give you a battery voltage. if not, there is an open between the alternator and a 7.5a fuse in the underhood fusebox. if you cant find an open between the fuse and the alternator, try using a known working alternator. if there is battery voltage, check contiuity between ignition1 (should be the eld 3 pin connector #2 terminal) and a body ground. the voltage for this is measured with the ignition key set on cold. it should have contiuty. if not there should be a loose connection or open ground wire somewhere. also, check the #3 teminal on the 3 pin connector to the ecu. it should lead to one of the junction plugs on the ecu on the D harness. also measure the ecu ground source 1 somewhere on the A harness (its either pin A6-A9) to the #3 teminal of the 3 pin connector should give you battery voltage when measured. the voltage should drop when you use battery power (ex. headlights on, stereo on, etc). if not, it means the eld has crapped on you. if it does drop on you are still getting the eld cel, its got to be the ecu.

as far as the o2 sensors go, what o2 sensors are they? the problem should be in the o2 sensor itself, the wiring, or the ecu. just check it like any other o2 sensor problem with any other car.

the speedo wont work if there is a short or open in the wire, because the ecu reads the pulses that the vss gives off as speed data. also, if the wiring is fine, then the problem is in the vss sensor itself or the ecu.

all this may seem like alot of info, but, once you get cracking on it, it really is just trying to wires and junction plugs.

good luck.

Re: lots of codes

PS: concerning the vss and possible culprit being the ecu, put the car on a lift and rotate the two front wheels with the key in the cold position. the vss should not be pulsing any voltage, if it does, you knnow the ecu has crapped on you.

thanks

the problem was going on before he slung the rod the block thanks for the help it was the eld. it fixed all of those problems both o2 and also the speedsensor
