Re: 97 sunfire won't start sometimes

Several items can cause this issue, bad battery terminal connections, bad starter solenoid, bad ignition switch. You will probably need to try all three to come up with the actual solution.

Re: 97 sunfire won't start sometimes

Check several things, first check the starter solenoid, try a remote starter or jumping across the terminals on the solenoid to see if it turns over. If it doesn't you probably have a bad connection at the starter solenoid or a bad solenoid. If the car does turn over you may have a bad ignition switch or lock cylinder.

If the security light is on you may need to reset that system as it may be preventing it from turning over.

Re: 97 sunfire won't start sometimes

if you can start the car by pushing it then you are lucky and all your sensors are ok. it sounds like you may have a simple problem of a bad battery connection. .you may also have a problem with the hot wire that goes to the starter. check your fusible links.

Since you state standard, there is a switch on the clutch pedal to allow starting when engaged. I had one of these go bad in a Ford Ranger. Maybe check this switch out.
