Chain tension leaking?

Hi everybody,

I just had my 99 Corolla w/74,000 miles inspected by the dealer as I was having the oil changed and they gave me a report saying the serp belt is cracked ($141.00) the chain tensioner is leaking ($134.05) machine rotors are very warped ($179.00) something about cleaning and adjusting RBS ($62.00) an induction service; carbon maintenance ($41.95).

The car seems to work great though. Do any of these prices seem exorbinant? Is there a simple way of me just looking under the hood to see any of these problems myself?

Re: Chain tension leaking?

hi,

well check the belt yourself.. does it look old? do you see leaks near the tensionner? and dont EVER get the rotors machined... they cost like 25 CDN each here... put on news ones... and go aftermarket... not toyota..induction service? carbon maintenance?? adjusting stuff on the EFI? come on this is a corolla, not a 87 ford tempo!whoa, this dealer is trying to screw you... so screw him! don't go there... in the least check the serpentine belt and have it done if you can't.. the rest like leaks if there not BIG leakes ( if you ever see one, which i doubt) can be corrected with minor interventions.. that leak on the tensionner must be something like an rubber O-ring.. check it out beofre giving this to a dealer...

pfft, some people...dealers i mean ! :P

Re: Re: Chain tensioner leaking?

Thanks for the reply,

I checked the belt and it has little cracks measuring a cm, but no chunks missing.

I subscribed to alldatadiy online to try and find all of the parts I listed up top but I still don't know where the chain tensioner is.

Also, will mechanics install car parts like belts and pads if the customer buys the parts elsewhere (for cheaper price) or is this taboo and not tolerated?

My dealer wants to charge $50 (parts) for the drive belt but looking online I see it for as low as $8. Whats the deal?

Re: Chain tension leaking?

well i got a shop here thats lets me buy my parts and they install them... if they dont agree find one that does.

for the rotors, it take a bout 30 minutes per wheel do to...tops..

the chain tensionner is dealer only i believe... and i dont think you need the whole thing.. just the gasket for it...again that shouldnt take too long to do and rather easy... but check first if you HAVE a leak.. if you see oil on the ground every time you leave the driveway that may be too much. but again.. be sure from where it's coming from.. like mine needs a oil pan badly.. its rusted and the gasket leaks..but after almost 17 years, thats normal.. but im gonna do it this spring.

Switch garages. CLeaning TPS pehaphs? Not likely needed unless the engine is hic-cupping at a spacific speed. Rotors new cost $20.00 ea. [if you do it yourself]. I think the engine may have to raised or lowered to replace the serpentine belt. Belt tensioner leaking?
