loud sound from the rear

Hi!

I just bought myself a Honda CR-V 1998 model and have done a few tests just to reassure myself that everything is alright before the used car warranty expires.

During a axeleration test on snow I heard a loud noise coming from down under the rear end of vehicle.

Could this come from the device that tranfers power to the rear axle when the front wheel starts spinning?
Isn't this some kind of a device containing a clutch like mechanism?

Could this clutch slip during a full throttle axeleration on snowy roads?

During a similar axeleration on dry asphalt there is no sound.
The sound is best described as a load hollering.

But the most important question is if this is fixable.
I guess the fix recuires a change of some kind of discs, and that my vendor will be reluctant to do it due to the cost.
Or is this a routine job?
But if this is rooted in a defect, my used car warranty is still active...

Re: loud sound from the rear

Sounds like you need to change the rear differential fluid. Make sure you use Honda Dual Pump Fluid ONLY.

Re: loud sound from the rear

There is a bulletin out but it is not a recall only advises to change the rear diff fluid at the sever use interval if you hear howling. Had to do my 98 at 65k and now at 142 I hear it again.
