Lightbulb b18c1 vs b18c5

hey, whats up AF. i have a small problem that i hope y'all can help me with.

me and a friend of mine (not into honda, into VW) are supposed to be having a little friendly competition. its a 1.8L 16v ALL MOTOR competition. we are trying to see who could get the faster car out of the both companies. i'll be using a 88-91 crx (possible an SI) and he'll be using a VW Rabbit (or Rabbit pick up truck).

i dont know whether i should choose the b18c1 or the b18c5. i know the compression ratio in the c5 helps give it the extra horsepower, but is there anything else that helps w/ this (besides the ECU cause i will most likely be going with the HONDATA setup).

also, we decided that as far as CAMS go, we would only use factory parts, but any other part on the motor can be aftermarket, so long as we stay within the 1.8L. from what i've heard, then best all motor cams are from the b16b. can someone give me some clarity on this?

thanks for your help guys.

Re: b18c1 vs b18c5

It's around a difference of 10.8:1 (b18c1) to 11.1:1 (ITR). the other differences are the cams and intake manifolds. The ITR has more aggressive cams and a head that comes with a mild P&P, it also can be reved higher. The GS-R has IAB (intake air bypass) on it's IM, not the best design for an IM. And yes the b16b (CTR) cams are the best, well the intake cam is anyways. The exhaust cams are the same with the ITR's, but the b16b's intake cam is more aggressive.

Honestly, go with the b18c1 (GS-R) engine. It's almsot as powerful and is cheaper. Get the CTR cams, an aftermarket intake manifold, and CTR valvetrain (or aftermarket). If you really want to go inexpensive, go with the ITR stock pistons and a thinner head gasket (2-ply).

whats the price difference in the two motors? And do you ever plan on rebuilding with forged internals?

The ITR engine is about $1,300+ more than the GS-R. Of course depending on where you shop.
