Weird sound
When I started my car this morning, it sounded like a belt was lose or something because there was a rambling noise. First thing that came to my mind was my timing belt but when I took off the cover, it was still in tack. Seemed semi-lose (not sure how tight it's supposed to be) but it was okay. My AC belt seemed okay as well so I have no idea what's going on. I called Musashi (yeah, hella early in the morning
) and he said it might be one of my pulleys, AC compressor, or water pump or something. Any ideas on how I could check what happened?I started the car about five times after I put the cover and everything back on. First time the car hesitated a bit and the second and third times it started kinda funny too (like weird cracking noise). I let it run for about 5 minutes and then turned it off and started it back up and it sounded fine. I turned it off again and started it back up and everything seemed okay again. I was thinking and I've been noticing that white smokes comes out of both exhaust now instead of just the driver side. Can that mean anything? Also, it's been freakin' cold recently and I have driven the car since Friday night so maybe that had something to do with it...but yeah, let me know what you guys think. Thanks. |

the timing belt should not be semi loose,it should be tight and you should not be able to feel any up or down movement on it at the top.if there is,get it checked out asap or it could be disaster. sounds like the tensioner could be packing up. if that belt breaks or jumps a tooth its gonna be expensive.................

Re: Weird sound
BB, whenever I start my car in the mornings, there's this "crackling" sound that I hear...could it be because of one of the belts? Also, is there a special tool that I need in order to tighten the timing belt?

Re: Weird sound
Doesn't sound like its coming from the belt, could be tappet noiseor something???
from memory,(been a while since i done one,) the timing belt is tensioned by a hydraulic tensioner so there is no adjustment. to test for tightness, with the belt cover off completely, before the tensioner, you should only be able to get maximum of say around 30-45 degrees side ways movement if you try to twist it with your hand. i.e left to right moement. this is only a guide i might add, if you are unsure it will pay you to get it checked out. there is a tool available but no one ever uses them over here in the uk. hope this helps. Brian.
