'95 GP Fuel odor

Hello All,

I was changing out a rear E Brake cable and detected a gasoline odor in the vicinity of the filler tube (smell behind the driver side rear wheel). I did not see any sign of wetness or leaks, but did notice the evaporative canister gear mounted to the rear of the filler tube. I see lots of rust on the tube and associated plumbing. Anyone had this problem with ideas for me? This is my sister-in-laws vehicle.

yeah i have a 98 and that thing is rusted to hell on mine too but everything around it is alright. i guess they didnt make them last all that long.

Could it be a hole in the gas tank ? On my previous car there was a rusty hole on the top side of the tank, not visible from the underneath, but the smell was there. Also when you gas up do you fill it up to the very max, including the filler tube ? If there is a small hole in there i would suggest only filling the tank, or leaving a lil bit out so that it doesnt leak out of the tube.
