1995 chevy tahoe

i have a question. my rear axle seals are leaking, went out last night and when i left i tried to back up and didnt have reverse, now it is making a wierd noise under the truck, since i dont have reverse would it be easier/cheaper to replace the gear or the tranny?

Take it to a reputable tranny shop, sounds like it may be a relitivly easy fix if you catch it early, do you still hard drive gears?

Yes i still have drive gears.......a mechanic i know said that it sounds like a clogged filter so he is gonna change the fluid and the filter for me...................i hope that fixes the problem. thanx
