I did my 200th oil change (well close to it), and never had this problem. I performed many oil changes on Neons , and this is my second oil change on my car today (99 Eclipse/420a). I believe the oil filter mount is stripped. An hour after finishing my oil change, I moved my car and saw oil on the ground.
Odd, I never got a drop on the ground during. I looked underneath and saw my oil filer was soaked. I double checked it and is seemed to spin. I never have and never will use oil filter wrenches. I only hand tighten. I used my usual FRAM with grip. In denial, I cleaned it up , turned the car around and put it in the garage. If it is stripped what kind of damage am I $$ for? I don't have a book at the moment. Is thie 'normal' for these engines? Is that section a bolt on area I can switch? Is this part of the engine block? ------- Rattle, leaky, rust happy, shitty bolts, P.I.T.A. bumpers, DSM Noob not liking DSM's so far...

Re: 99'/420a DSM: Oil Filter Mount Stripped?
first of all...fram filters are one of the worst ones you can use for an engine but that shouldn't have anything to do with this.
no that's not normal for it to just spin. but if it doesn't tighten down you'll need to replace the threaded part. i'm pretty sure that those threads are removable. i think that it's just a regular bolt on the other end of those that threads into the block. when i took mine out it was a BITCH to get out though, it was in there pretty good. |

Re: 99'/420a DSM: Oil Filter Mount Stripped?
this wouldn't make the filter not tighten, but when you took off the old filter did you check to make sure the o-ring on the oil filter wasnt stuck on the oil filter housing. Maybe you put the new filter o-ring on top of the old o-ring, making it not seal and causing oil to come out. Just a suggestion.

*Double Seal*
OMG, I can't believe I forgot to check the old oil filter seal. I think I didnt bother because I'd have to crawl up farther, and the oil pan was in the way. I was working in front of the wheel cuz' I had a jack at the jackpoint. I've heard of it happening, but never seen it in all my oil changes..... *whew* |

Re: 99'/420a DSM: Oil Filter Mount Stripped?
you know the black seal around the filter? make sure the oil seal came off with the old filter. you dont need 2 seals and will definately leak
