Would a '91 engine fit into a '93 Metro ??

I have the opportunity of buying a 1991 Geo Metro for $300.

I placed an ad, a few weeks ago, in a local small advertiser paper
asking if anyone had a used Geo Metro or Tracker for sale.

I got several calls and today a woman wants to sell her '91 Metro.

I was thinking that maybe this would be an excellent way to get
another 3 cylinder Geo engine for my '93 Metro.

She didn't know *ANYTHING* about it other that she wants to sell it.
.......Women! Doesn't know what the engine is, the total mileage,
only that it is a Metro...... If it is crap, I won't buy it - BUT >>>

I thought - for $300, what the hell - parts! Engine - transmission -
Wheel knuckles - bucket seats - instrument cluster - windows -
doors - body parts - throttle body - radiator - keep going!

I will look at it tomorrow. She says it runs.
I am assuming it is a 3 cyl engine since it is a '91.

Again - could I use a '91 3 cylinder engine in my good '93 Metro?
Did the engines change much in that time period?

Bill,

The engines are the same. There are other chaps here on this forum, recently even, that wrote about buying low milage JDM engines for about $300 or so in the Tacoma area. If all you are after is the engine itself the the JDM route is the way to go.

I've read the term "JDM" here quite often, and I realize they are engines imported from Japan, usually with low miles (ala Ebay) - but what exactly does JDM stand for? (Japanese Direct Motors?)

$300 for a Metro... and maybe less depending on how much they're willing to "negotiate". Having spare parts (especially all the parts) may come in very handy, especially if you plan on keeping the vehicle for some time. Nice thing about the Metro parts is that most are comparatively small and light (easier to store).

JDM= Japanese Domestic Market

I live on 4.3 acres in a small 'country' town.

I can park the old car behind my house in some trees.
Or out front in plain view....I care what they think here..?

Anyway - parts. Wheels, spare tires, seats, body, windows,
doors, dashboard, lights, transmission, engine, wiring,
computer, struts, gas tank, tail lights, radiator, pullys,
on and on...... What a treasure!

My God - people sure do trash their vehicles!

I looked at the '91 Metro 3 cylinder on Monday.....

Some older woman owned it. Looked fairly good as I drove up.

I opened the hood first and pulled out the oil dip-stick,

Dry except for one small drop of black oil on the very end!

I told her I didn't want to start the engine that way, did she have
any oil? She goes back in the house and comes out with a bottle
of 40 weight! The temp here is around 32 °F now......

So I gave her the spiel about 5W-30 and how 40 weight would plug
up the hydraulic lifters. Nothing.... "Oil is oil, isn't it?"

So after putting a can of 5W-30 I had in my trunk into this old beast,
I started it up. sounded like a diesel engine. Wouldn't downshift
into 2nd gear turning a corner.

All the switches and handles and glovebox was either broken off
or busted. Heater fan didn't work.

She had trashed the inside and the engine. The speedometer said
21,000 - one of the old 5 digit kind. 121 K or 221 K or 321 K ?????

Too bad - thought I might find a good deal.

So many people drive cars w/o checking the oil until the oil pressure
light comes on - mostly women!

most any metro you can get with a decent body and halfway decent seats and interior for under $400 is a decent deal, you can drop in a jdm engine and drive it or sell it fairly quick for 1200-1700 + - depending on shape. sound like this one needs a tranny too, real common for syncros to go bad and not downshift into 1st or 2nd gear

There wasn't anything worth messing with on THAT car except maybe the wheels.
The interior was trashed, the engine and transmission, the
body had been whacked on the gas cap corner.

Nope.....
