Rip it apart (at least take the head off) and see, but it doesn't sound good.

I agree pull the head. But first pull the timing belt cover. Did it slip?

Well, the simplest thing to do is just pull the top portion of the timing cover off. Depending on your car, you might just be able to unscrew a few bolts/screw for the top cover and just slide it out a little bit to see if the belt is still on the cam gear. I would post a picture, but I don't know how to. Does anyone know?

Anyways, if the belt slipped off, then you might have some serious internal problems. First thing is to check all the valves. Your pistons might have bent them. Then Check the tops of pistons for any visible damage. (This probably is unlikely, but can happen) and check the cam for any scoring and etc. It's good idea to just give the head area a look over to see if anything is abnormal. Even if it looks okay, I would crank the motor manually with out power to see or hear anything unusual. All the valve movements should be normal. I.E) Intake valve(s) open, then exhaust, all in firing order... Don't try to start or turn the motor with the starter again unless you know exactly what's wrong.

Good luck.
