car started bucking violently at 85mph

I was going down i-84 in newyork and i was cruzing at about 75 in my 90 gsx 5spd then this lady cut me of so i sped up to pass her and right while i was acclerating to about 85 my car started bucking and making a nasty noise. So i push the clutch in slowed down and let the clutch out agian and it was fine. Needless to say i didnt go 85 for the rest of the trip to my painter. i think my right fron strut is blown it clunks when i hit bumps a mechanic said that could be the problem. because at high speeds it might lose stability any other ideas? It felt like somthing was wrong drivetrain wise. I Also dont think it is boost related because i have ran full boost many prior times without problems. could it be a bad axle, ball joint, wheel bearing, clutch related or transfer case related? also could it also be a motor mount issue, fuel or spark issue?

Yeah. Sounds like you were starving at hig speed. Could be fuel pump, fuel filter. Again ignition problem is a possibility.

Re: Re: car started bucking violently at 85mph

this is the 3rd time this has happend to me the first time i redlined first and put it in second and it bucked at me the second time i was agoing up a little hill went to 3000 in first put it in second and it bucked a little and now this last time cruzing in 5th push hard up to 85-90 and it bucks hard at me. so you guys think its fuel or ignition related. i also had a problem 3 weeks ago that went away my belts were squeeling really bad and when i would slow down my car would almost die and i could forget about doing a little 3 point turn around cuz it would die when creeping around. the belts one day stop squeeling and i havent had that problem since.

I'd replace the strut, since it's already a likely issue. If you're unstable at speed, it's a good bet. It'll also give you the washerboard effect, which isn't very cool. If you want to know how to test the strut before buying a new one, try compressing it in your hands and see if it slowly receeds. A sudden amount of pressure should lock it, so to speak.

I doubt it's fuel cut if you are boosting correctly. Checking for boost leaks could rule that out. Also, I don't know why it would be a spark issue if you were only affected from 85+. If it's not the strut or boost leak issues, I'd look into the wheel alignment and then transmission issues. Easy things first, though.

I-84, ah, my favorite in NY. Best road to speed on evar.

Edit>> I just missed your post by a few minutes. Um, I guess I'll have to write something else in a bit.

Re: car started bucking violently at 85mph

i think my strut is weak but it wouldnt have anything to do with the first 2 times and the stalling so. also i dont think i have any boost leaks besause i have ran full boost numerous times so thats why i think it is fuel related.im plan on bringing my car to a mechanic what should i tell him to look at? fuel wise that is.

You might wanna check out the spark plugs. I had a problem a while back when I hit something in the area of 10-12 psi. It was intermitent for a while and occured until I put in the stock plugs. It's an easy and cheap thing you can do to help find the problem.

Check the spark plug wires also, if one is loose on the coil pack it will give you the same feeling you described.
