97 EX Hood Won't Open

The plastic on the end of the cable cracked off, as most do, but I have always used some needle nose to open it. Well, this morning it would not open. Pulled out about half to 3/4 of an inch but nothing. Any advice to get it open? Anyway to do it from the outside of the car? I am planning on replacing the cable but I need the hood open to do it. Should I just pull the shit out of the cable and hope it opens? I don't want to mess it up more than it already is.

Thanks in advance.....
