STI VS Civic SI (Need some advice)

Okay I posted a similier question awhile back about STI vs EVO vs Ms6, and that narrowed down my choices to just the STI and Civic SI 06. Um Im not looking for a performance comparison honestly I know they are two totally different cars what I need to know is what you would do in this (good) situation.Basically Ive got 15k saved up for a car and I have two choices. I could either A. Get an 06 Civic SI and Fix up my 1990 240SX(SR20 Swap etc), or I could get a 06 STI and not touch my 240 for about four years. Ive weighed the pros and cons and in all honesty this is going to be the First and maybe last time I can afford a car at the STI's caliber. Plus this would be my daily driver. I live in a place where it does snow but yet I would be driving of 40 miles daily to get to and from school/work. People have told me "hey get the STI its balls fast and you only live once" other people say "Just get the civic even though hondas are slow you can make the 240 spank an STI" Im just trying to make the right choice because i dont wanna fuck myself over for the next five years since I would be financing either car. I have an integra now and its okay but I cant stand FWD, yet the civic gets VERY good gas mileage and handles(so I heard) like a S2000. Too sum it all up and to quit my bitching it comes down to this. Either take the fast road and have a fast car right out of the box, or take the safe route and get a civic and take a few months to build the 240? So what would you do?

Re: STI VS Civic SI (Need some advice)

lol yeah I know right, welp just got off the phone with my insurance company "Yes Mr. **** your premium would increase by six thousand and four hundred dollars and thirty cents by the end of your term increasing your monthly payment to one thousand six dollars and fifty one cents", me"Wow yall are smoking crack", progressive "Sir Im not the one with all the tickets on his record" Me"Eh okay so how much for a 2006 Civic SI" Progressive "Do you have a vin number?" Me"Nope" them"Well doesnt look like we have any on file let me check*waits* okay we have five on file(Me thinking who the hell has these already) your premium would be reduced by one thousand two hundred and some odd dollars and your payments would drop to 689 dollars and ten cents a month" Me"Kay, bye" So yeah getting the civic or I may say fuck it and get a Sentra Spec V 2005 for 14.5grand brand spanking new and drop ten g's in the 240 or buy an S14. God damn insurance is a pain

Re: STI VS Civic SI (Need some advice)

hm, sounds like you've already gotten into alot of trouble... and the sti would cost you more then it says it will, with the extra insurance.

i'd go with the civic. or wait for the rumored civic si sedan next year and do some work on your 240sx now... unless you need that daily driver BEFORE doing the work.. in which case just get the civic.

i'd say get the 06 si and keep it bone stock as a daily driver. this way you won't moan when the 240 is down waiting for parts of is waiting for a tune or when it breaks.

trust me, even with a car like the STi you would not want to keep it stock for long. and hooking up an STi is not cheap. a turbo back cost around $1000, then you would need fuel management system so you won't blow your engine when it boost creeps to 20 psi in the winter. a UTECH will cost you around $800, and it would cost on average $150-200 per tune. its not cheap. insurance would rip your balls off. and your 240 is not gettin any younger so it won't make the best beater either.

i would get a sentra spec V for $15k like you mentioned above. payments suck, especially when trying to modify another car. trust me...

i have a 300zxTT and i bought a 2000 Grand Prix GTP as a DD while the 300zx was down. now, i wish i would have just bought something that i could have paid off. because even how minute the payment may be, it is still money taking away from the car you really want the money to go to.

if i were in your shoes i would sink some money into the 240sx and just buy like a $10k DD type car. a 5th gen prelude comes to mind, maybe a used WRX for a little more.

the options are endless but you will only regret getting another payment when trying to modify another car.

I certainly would not get a Spec V Sentra, they're just so boring, however that's just me. I can't stomach the thought of a sports car with FWD. If you're going to do the SR20DET swap to your 240, go ahead and do it, but I wouldn't tie up all your money into another car while you plan on doing a sr20det swap. I wouldn't look for another FWD car to replace your Integra with, because it's still going to torque steer in a straight line, and understeer like crazy in the corners. It sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too, but if you go through with this (nice car and a very expensive modification to your 240) you're gonna be broke in a hurry.

Re: STI VS Civic SI (Need some advice)

thanks for the responses guys, yeah Ive decided just too fix up the 240 and get the civic. Um I would keep my integra cause I do love the damn car except when I bought it I got screwed. It had been in a wreck, now has wiring probs(No running lights no horn no ABS) the suspension camber is all F"d up cause I swirved too hit a deer and wrecked it myself, yeah its a POS that has cost me WAY too much damn money. Its still quick as balls but cosmetic probs + all this other stuff and Im still making payments yeah its gotta go, oh yeah and I put a new tranny in it. And Ive thought about a prelude but yet again they cost too much for a used one and I really want something with less then 20K miles on it. And my benchmark for this next car Im buying is to be as fast as an Integra GSR with Mild Bolt ons. Oh and insurace is WAY too high on my integra. Before I wrecked it I was paying 850 a month with progressive. And this next car is a graduation/Transplant gift so my mother wont help me buy anything thats older then a 03. FYI: shes HELPING me with the new car not flat out buying it Ive been saving for a year and a half soooo yeah, any way thanks everyone for the advice.

Re: STI VS Civic SI (Need some advice)

does it have to be an STi? what about a regular wrx? i'm sure the insurance would be better and it's still got most of the potential that the STI has, espeically if you get a new one with the 2.5L.

Re: STI VS Civic SI (Need some advice)

well heres the thing about a regular WRX, I cant leg wize fit in it comfy. But for some reason Ive got just enough room in the STI. Im pretty sure the seats are different. Also Ive driven the normal WRX five times trying to convince myself "Your comfortable you can get comfortable" and also "The clutch isnt that bad dont worry about it" But I may reconsider since I want AWD idk. Also I HATE the pedal lay out with the stock wrx with those "race" pedals". The clutch and brake pedal feel too close together and I feel like my "area" gets squinched up. Also the gearbox feels shaky and imprecise and I woudlnt spend 26K on a base wrx so Ide be getting a 05 or a 04 and I cant stand how that engine feels. Its got power just alot of turbo lag and it has HORRIBLE engine response. But thats just my opinion. Still though Turbo AWD is hard too pass up. Imma have to go drive it again.

Re: STI VS Civic SI (Need some advice)

those are reasonable excuses. at least you've tested out your options. i'd go with the civic then, an STI just isn't that practical, especially with the insurance being so high, and a new SI is probably a bit faster than an SE-R spec-v. personally, i'd say fuck 'em all and get yourself a nice sportbike. it'll run in the 10's or better out of the box, get good gas mileage when needed, they're cheap on insurance and it'll cost 1/2 to 1/3 as much as a brand new car.

A lil late in your query...But I agree with what you are going to do

Sti is very nice powerful car and can be a daily driver, but insurance sees your age/sex and will murder you on insurance

Daily driver civic with a 240 to play with is a good call, I think we would all like a situation like that

Re: STI VS Civic SI (Need some advice)

If you're gonna get an STi, make sure you have the money to upgrade and maintain it, or you'll regret it. In your situation, I'd go with a nice, cheaper sport compact. The SE-R Spec V is junk, but the new Civic Si looks nice. Don't listen to the idiots ranting about insane torque steer and understeer, a well-tuned FWD vehicle (like a sporty Honda) can keep both to a bare minimum.
