high idle
Ive got a weird problem that just started out of nowhere. My engine is idling very high because the throttle wont return all the way by itself. I can push it the 1/8 inch to where its up against the idle screw but as soon as i push the gas and then let off it back to being stuck an 1/8 inch away from the screw. Now when the car is off and i mess with the throttle it returns just fine. Anybody got any ideas?

On a carbed motor, maybe also on a TBI. MPFI systems just raise the idle speed to smooth out and attempt to attain 14:1 air/fuel ratio.

I don't know if an exhuast leak as anything to do with, but i had similar porblems do to the manifold bolts being extremely loose. But you probably don't smell that nasty stuff anyways, so why did i even post?

My passenger side manifold leaks a bit but ive put off dealing with it until i do plugs and remove the smog junk. I dont think the leak it that bad but i can certainly hear it.

My car was really loud (in a bad way) when i had that leak, and on demand performance was not there at all. My leak was really bad. If you couldn't notice, something must be wrong with you nostrils. The back half of the driver's side cylinder head was covered in sut. But i agree with what wrightz28 said, looks like you gotta a vaccy leak somewhere.

I agree with most that it is vacuum related. However, instead of a constant leak and assuming this is a carburated system, check the throttle dashpot. This is a device which prevents your throttle to slam shut when you lift you feet of the gas pedal. It is vacuum activated. The vacuum is released slowly and allows the throttle to ease shut. It could be that the vacuum is not being released and thus causing the throttle to remain slightly open. When you shut your engine down, you lose all you vacuum and so the dashpot collapses until you start up your car and build up vacuum again.

tpi injection is what i have. How could it be a vacuum leak if i can push the throttle bracket against the idle screw and then the idle goes to normal.

Its gotta be somethin like that. Ill just clean it up best i can with some throttle cleaner and see what I come up with.
