Pat i would check the operation of your glow plug system and the fuel pressure at the fuel pump. (maybe your fuel is bleeding down at night from a bad regulator? So that you have know fuel pressure in the morning untill it cranks a bit?  It has to be somthing simple because there is not a hole lot to stop a diesel from running. Unfortunatly my experience is with road tracters and the motor you have may be drastically different. I would recomend that after you find this problem i would then install some sort of block heater and or fuel heating system, because as you said it gets stupidly cold in Vermont...jj
