4runner dies

I have a 1990 4runner v6 3vze, its got about 213,000 miles. i was driving on the interstate, when i noticed a burning smell. after a few more miles i my rpms dropped down and then kicked right back up. right after that it died. i looked underneith and there was a puddle of oil on the ground drippin from the skid plate. i cant find the location of the leak, and when i checked the oil it was completely out. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Need more information,
Automatic?
Not good if it was, engine runs but not moving?
Could the oil be from the engine and just "blown" back and collected on the transfer case?
Was it leaking for a long time? Were you putting in oil a lot?
Is your back tailgate and window speckled with oil spots?
