Thumbs down Van Wont Start, NOspark COIL! 94 dodge ram van 5.9L a518

i checked my coil its good
i checked my distributor its good
i checked my crank sensor its good
I checked the fuse to the starter its good

the van turns and turns and turns but no spark
the starter is working the distributor rotor is turning but no spark

i cant figure it out ive been trying for weeks

i read over the forums and i was trying to find my starter relay but there is no fuses under this 94 van under the hood, i have a 96 van that is exactly the same and the fuses are right under the hood by the radiator

i dont know im almost gona give up

check the things inside the cap, i had a truck when the rust gets on the thing the causes the spark it wont send the spark though the wires to the spark plugs.usally when it dont spark the spark plugs, cap,or rotor is bad.

Hi,
You can check the fuel auto-shutoff relay under the brake booster, it comes with a pair of relays (2 on a single bracket).

Fuses I have found are near the glove box, under a panel to the left.

You said you checked the distributor, did you check the Hall effect pickup coil? It is right below the rotor and if it is not working- no spark.

Aloha

PS- My 5.9L '94 will erratically crap out from time to time and then not start for about 1/2 hour! I am at wits end myself!

electricty is like water work your way upstream.

take the cable from the coil to the distributer cap off, when you try and start holiding it an inch from the post does it spark

this is easier to see in a van than almost any other car you can start it and see the cable all at once

ok well no spark there, you gotta work your way upstream

spark there work your way downstream.

does a 94 have a ballast resistor? ok well upstream from the coil, you are no longer looking for spark but electricity. so is the coil getting electricity? 12 volts i think it is nothing complicated. follow it to battery. someone else can possibly list all the circuits between battery and secondary ignition.

if its downstream well after coil there is cable and plug.

i dont want to critique anyone else but the other advice here is loony

the car is not getting spark so check a fuel shut off? check the distributer? wtf?

the starter is going so look for the starter relay? wtf? stop before you do anything else. is there spark coming from the coil to the distributer? take the cable off and hold it close to the top post.
do that and come back before stuff gets too crazy.

ok heres what you do, is there spark? is there fuel? thats what you do in a non starting vehicle. ok thanks answer those questions.

ok

edit

now you say theres no power going to the coil?

ok well we need to see the systems between the battery and the coil. ok quick diagnosis here to save time, do you have another battery?

if the input on your coil is 12 v use a jumper wire from a battery not attached to a alternator see if it sparks then.

ok if it does then something is wrong between battery and coil.

theres not a repair really.its going to be easier to rewire to it. if it uses a ballast resistor one wire one resistor battery to coil

double check the electrical systems in your van. my van is a 89 and i could be missing something that is in yours and not in mine.

Re: Van Wont Start, NOspark COIL! 94 dodge ram van 5.9L a518

Hi all,
We must remember that this is a computer-controlled coil, and there are a few things the computer needs to send signals to the coil:

Distributor pickup signal

Crankshaft position signal (if equipped... may only be on 5.9 L)

Ignition position

In addition, to prevent "dieseling", the van has a auto-shut off relay that stops both the flow of gas and coil when shutting vehicle off, this is also the relays that activate in an accident.

Any one of these could fail and give you no spark.... including the SMEC, though that is rare.

Testing circuits is a good idea, as mentioned, upstream from the problem...
