86 Voyager poor shift. please help!

Hey there guys. im new to this site, but it looks pretty neat! I have a question about an 86 voyager. My dad gave me this vehicle and i want to fix the problem and sell it to fund my 53 chevy. The problem is that it doesn't want to shift in to second, and when it does, it won't come back to first. This doesn't happen all the time, and manually shifting doesn't seem to help. im hoping that its maybe a computer problem that is easily fixed, and not a tranny problem because i dont really want to pull the motor. The van has a carbutrated inline 4, and its not the mitsubishi engine, thats what my dad told me. other than this problem, the van runs like a top. Thanks for any help in advance!

The transmission in a '86 voyager is not computer controlled. I assume that you have the 3-speed automatic and not a 5-speed manual. The van is not worth as much as a transmission cost to replace or fix.
The "Blue Book" private party resale value of a running, no mechanical problems '86 Voyager with AT and Air is $250-$300. Subtract some for any problems or worn out items. With a bad transmission, you may have to pay the junk yard to haul it away.

Yeah thats pretty much what i had figured. i thought it might be something easy to fix. oh well, the local pick and pull will give me a few bucks for it, so off it goes i guess. Thanks neon-rt.

See what codes come up - check for a 37. The code doesn't set the CES, but is recorded in history.

The 3-speed transmission uses a throttle cable to sense changes in speed. It is a seperate cable connected from your gas pedal to the transmission. When it rusts up (binds up), your car won't shift properly and a code 37 is set.
