Starters are normally mounted near where the transmission connects to the engine block as it is designed to engae the fly wheel to start. However, many compacts have pretty tight spaces around the engine compartment. One way is to follow a large cable coming out of the positive post of you battery and that will lead you directly to the starter coil.
