My 94 Grand Caravan stopped jerking hard at a signal while waiting. I started the engine, it's ok untill I change the gear into over drive or reverse. It would die again. Somehow gear 3 worked ok.
This van has a little whirling noise while driving at low speed. Also on highway after traffic jammed up the rpm goes high and doesn't come down. I have to get got of highway, stop the engine, and wait 10 minutes or more to start the engine with normal rpm. It has a 200K mile odometer reading and former owner said it has transmission rebuilt around 125K miles. It has new fan gasket job a month ago because it was leaking a lot. What's wrong with this van? What is the cheapest remedy for it? Thank you very much in advance for any suggestions or opinions. Please ask me if you need more information. |

Re: Grand Caravan - Transmission Problems?
The RPM problem you describe is the engagement of "limp home mode". You are supposed to take it in for service when that happens to avoid a total failure and get stranded. "Limp home mode" locks the trans into second gear so you can get home if the trans has a problem. Error codes regarding the failure are stored in you trans computer and can be read by most modern shops.

Re: Grand Caravan - Transmission Problems?
I don't think I know of any cheap remedy for the ailment you have described and the high mileage of your car. At this point I will say that it's even dangerous to drive the van especially in the freeway.
