Where is the Brake Relay Switch

Well, both of my brake lights went completely out, but the tri light still works. I still have turn signals and lights when the headlamps are on.

so, I am thinking that the brake relay has gone bad or loose.... but

where exactly is it?

I have a 98 Taurus SE with the 24v V6.

thanks.

Re: Where is the Brake Relay Switch

There is no relay for the brake lights. There is just a brake pedal position switch located near the brake pedal. When you press on the brake pedal, the switch contacts close and provide battery voltage to the brake lights.

The Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL) uses the same switch as the tail lights, so the switch must be okay. Have you tried using a test light at the bulb socket?

Are you sure you got the correct bulbs and put them in properly?

Yes, I am sure of the bulbs. There is only one way for them to go in.

I bought the Stop Light switch ($20.00) at the ford dealership.

I replaced that and nothing happened. It's going into the dealer next friday for a diagnostic to be run to see if they can chase down the culprit.
