Question Scanned Code

hello everyone;

Normally I do not post threads in this section but, it seems my girls car is having some problems. Now the story.....
It seems that she needs to get her admission test done and she went to Jiffy Lube to get her admision test done and they said that she needs to go see an admission mechanice. When she told me that I said "screw that" we are going to autozone. She has the checked engine light on so, I went ahead and had it scanned. After it was scanned the following code appeared PO402. Now, they told me it could be a catalytic convertor, oil leak, or a valve leak. My question now is how can I go about fixing this problem?
How can I check to see which problem it exactly is?
She didn't pass the admissions because her check engine light is on and if I get the check engine light off she should be able to pass the test. Am I correct when saying this?
Lastly what exactly is an emission test?

Thank You for all your help

First, you take an admission test to get into college. You get an emissions test to certify your vehicle is running clean.

See here for a description on the P0402 error code. You most likely have a bad EGR valve. It may need cleaned if there is excessive carbon (soot) buildup, or the solenoid itself may be defective.

Most (all?) states won't pass a car if the check engine light is on. If the check engine light is on, that means that the computer has detected a malfunction somewhere. Even if the car could technically pass the emissions test, there is still a problem that must be corrected. That being said, mearly not having the check engine light on doesn't guarantee that you'll pass either.

It's a check to see how complete of combustion your car is running as well as how efficient your catalytic converter is breaking down the exhaust gasses into a little more enviromentally friendly gasses. Often a general road ready survey of the car is done to make sure the car is reasonably safe (e.g. no bald tires, suspension good, etc). They will also stick a sensor in the tail pipe to take a reading on the gasses.

Re: Re: Scanned Code

Now my next question is where do I go about purchasing a DPFE sensor? Where is the sensor located?

Thanx

Re: Re: Scanned Code

Mistake!!!!!!!!

I had entered the wrong code into the computer. The code that was scanned was not PO402 but PO420 now I know that makes a big difference. So I would like to know what that code means....
Thanx

Re: Re: Re: Scanned Code

Well I am going to reply to my own message....
I figured out the code, and it said a possible solution is to reset the code how do I go about reseting it?
Next, where are the oxygen sensors and what do I use to test the voltage on them?
