do you have a regular license. if so how long you been driving. if you havent driven before i would seriously consider taking a riding course. you're pretty young and i remember how invinsible i felt back at 17. you have to baby sit the traffic out there cause they dont look for bikes all they look for is other cars. have fun ridin and remember not to skimp on gear get a good helmet and dont ride around like those tuff guys with a tank top. just ask some one whos had road rash how the hospital treats that. good luck.

^take the riding course regardless. it's saved my ass at least 2-3 times this season alone.

Re: am i too young to get a motorcycle license

in Ontario you have to be 16 for an m1, then you wait a year before you can test for your m2, then wait a year before you can test for M. m1 you can ride anything except freeways and i don't think you're allowed a passenger and you can't have any alcohol in your system, m2 you can't have any alcohol in your system, M it is your full licence and you can drive anything anywhere.

Wait a minute. In Canada you can take a test which allows you to drink and drive?

^no. with a regualr drivers license you can have 1-2 beers and still not fail a breathalizer if you blow under .08(or whatever the legal limit is), but if you have the restricted license you're not allowed to have any alcohol in your system, like if you blow a .01 with it, you'll still get a dwai.

Re: am i too young to get a motorcycle license

yeah, that's what i meant. you pretty much have to wait 1hr after 1 beer before you drive, or drive normally so you dont get pulled over

Re: am i too young to get a motorcycle license

The other thing you want to know is what is the practical part of the test like where you live?

Here in MO it's not bad but would really throw a new rider. You have to slalom little cones, stay between two lines about a foot apart for 100 feet and take more than 15 seconds to do it, without putting a foot down or crossing a line (good test of balance and throttle/clutch control), accelerate to 25 mph then begin braking at a marked point, and stop with your front tire in a 2'x2' box painted on the ground, etc, etc.

Easy if you have comfortable control and familiarity with your bike, really tough if you just started riding or aren't familiar with your bike yet.

Most guys I know (including me) rode for several months without a motorcycle endorsement before actually going and getting it. It's a cheap ticket here if you get stopped, sometimes they don't even sweat it if you seem to be riding well.

I am not advocating this method, the others are right, the correct way is to go through an MSF course. Here they even do the license practical test there at the school, so you aren't on an unfamiliar course when you take the test for real...and you use their bikes, which are very light and docile.

Cracked me up when I went to get my test. there's this guy riding a big new Yamaha Dresser and he's about 5'4" and can't hardly flat-foot the ground sitting on it, and obviously a new rider trying to clear the course. after about 2 or 3 tries and failing the first manuevers the examiner sent him packing.

Take something manageable to test on. they don't care who's it is or anything. Borrow some old CB350 or something.

But one way or the other you gotta get some time on a bike before testing.
