Unhappy 95 seville northstar wide open throttle

I have a 95 sls with the northstar v8 160k mis.Had heard a backfire a couple of times the last few weeks when cranking warm. Also had had a hard start a time or two.The other day while warm i cranked it and the engine went to full throttle.Must have a rev limiter because it would go up to 5/7 krpm and drop off to 2.Any ideas ?Thanks

How did it go to full throttle , by itself?? Plugs, wires,a coil can all cause your symptoms, mileage since last tune?, AC plugs a must here.

Last weekend I cranked it after it sat for about 10mins and it went wot.Startled me and I shut it down.Never touched the gas pedal.Disconnected battery and recranked with same problem. This happened last Sat.
Last night I canked it to see what may happen after sitting there for a few days and it went to 3krpm,so I put it in gear and it dropped to 1300-1500rpm and stayed there even after temp came up to normal.Drove around the block and 1300-1500 rpm was idle rpm while stopped.Exhaust had a funny smell, but other than that it drove ok.
I dont know when last tuneup was.Ive put 60k on car since Ive had it.
Thanks for replying, any help would be appreciated.Ive had to borrow a car that will have to be returned this weekend so im walking if I cant figure this out.
PS:FYI, I have above average mechanical skills. So any suggestions shouldnt be over my head.

After reading some other posts it seems I may have contributed to the problem.I usually go through 2 1/2 tanks of fuel a week.Travel a lot.Almost all hiway miles.Have seldom ever put any thing in at the pump but the low octane reg unleaded.

Have you checked for any codes by turning the key to "ON" and simultaneously pressing "OFF" and "WARMER" on the climate control?

This REALLY sounds like a FPR problem to me.
Take off the beauty cover and make sure that the vacuum hose going to the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulater) is still attached. If it is, turn the key to the on position (engine can be running, but doesn't have to be) to pressurize the fuel rail. Then detach the vacuum hose from the FPR. If you see ANY fuel at all come out of the vacuum side of the FPR (or out of the vacuum hose), it is bad. If it turns out to be good, I would still suspect a vacuum leak to the FPR. Maybe the vacuum hose became disconnected at the other end.

Hope this helps.

You need to replace the idle control motor sounds like to me...Very simple 60.00 fix from auto zone.

Re: 95 seville northstar wide open throttle

I do not know if this has anything to do with this or not but I just received a recall notice the other day calling for the replacement of the fuel rail on my 96. You may want to check and see if there are any recalls on yours. The notice didn't say just why it was being recalled and the dealer was not saying either. Good luck.
