which vin motors leak plastic intake ?
ive got a 1995 lesaber with an L vin numbered 3800 engine , it loses about an 1/2 inch of coolant in the recovery bottle every 6 months , is this normal. i havent seen or smelled any leaks in or under the hood . ive been told that the K series of motors egr valve burned holes in the plastic intake the worst. do the L vin motors do this as well . would putting a smaller hole restrictor in the egr line help cool the hot exshast gasses going through the plastic intake ? not blocking it off ,but just letting less hot air through the intake passage ? david moon

Most 3800 series engines all the way up to present day although GM has inproved on the design somewhat from 2000 up but they still come up,I have had three Olds with 3800 motors and only one went at 90,000 miles and it was a 95 and I figured if I got that many miles from the original I could go another 50-60 more and not worry about it. good luck |

What is the chance of an intake from a 2000+ fitting on a 97? Thanks Dan |

Dorman/Napa has a replacement improved manifold for about 220.00

It will fit but dont restrict that egr tube ,it may cause back pressure and create a new problem,if you buy a new one make sure its the latest model by Delfi. |

Are you saying that the 2000 manifold will restrict the egr if used on a 97 engine? The reasone why I'm asking is I'm thinking about getting a used 2000+ manifold and putting on my 97. That is if it's better and if it will fit. Thanks Dan |

It is the series II 3800,vin k that has the problem with the plastic intake leak.I have seen to the point they will not start and have to suck out the water with a wet/dry shop vac after removing the upper intake.If this happens,remove all spark plugs and roll the engine over to get the rest of the water out.Replace the plugs and use Ac Delco spark plugs.

No I'm not saying that,the 2000 manifold will fit just the way it is,what I suggested was not to modify the egr tube that is in the bottom manifold too much because it will cause back pressure,You may also find that the used 2000 manifold has deteriation also. |

You might want to consider one of these;

I don't believe I'm having problems right now. Once and a while I do smell antifreeze. The guy I bought the car from said that he fixed the intake. However, I found the oil level sensor unpluged when I bought the car. Can I really believe what this guy said? I do like the looks of the complete kit you found on Ebay. Thanks again Dan in MN |

I can handle misspellings....that would put you and I in the same boat. I don't know why I didn't think of doing a psi test of the cooling system! I've done them before....I guess you had to think of it for me. Thanks Dan |

I used to be able to handle misspellings,but I never knew if she was a true blond. When you make the pressure test disconnect you air breather from the throttle body and remove the defuser screen then listen and look while under pressure. |
