transmission fluid

how do you check or add transmission fluid to a 2002 bug 2.0 liter with automatic trans?

The plug on the tranny pan is the level check, undo it and if nothing comes out you need to add fluid.
BUT
It must be checked at 95 - 113 degrees F
and the car must be level.
Make sure you select all gears while the car is warming up
to circulate the fluid.
There is a fill plug with a cover up near the one of the air conditioner lines
which you can see from underneath the car on the transaxle.
I added fluid (special VW type) by undoing the banjo bolt on the tranny cooler and adding fluid thru the hole the bolt came from
(be careful of the o-rings) and also be carefull not to contaminate the fluid with Pentosin (red) anti-freeze.
The manual recommends new seals for the level check plug as well
I re-used mine (no leaks)
Not an easy process and I recommend you find a manual with pictures.
unless you like doing this
The manual recommends a cooking or darkroom thermometer
inserted in the level check hole.
