Car won't turn off!

I have a 95 model. And I have taken the key out, and the engin continues to run. And i have a huge 30 gal. tank that's full. Any ideas on how to turn it off, and how to fix?

Re: Car won't turn off!

Try pulling the fuses to the battery, ignition etc, until it shuts off. it sounds like the ignition switch may be faulty as you remove the key but the engine remains on.

Did you get it shut off or did it run out of gas?

Re: Car won't turn off!

this same thing happened to me the other day, I had to use the emergency fuel pump switch in the back to shut the engine down, and then disconnect the battery. I have no clue what is going on, seems like the ignition revesed itself some how, any suggestions on what you did to fix the problem?

Re: Car won't turn off!

Its nice to see someone can keep their Windstar going. Most people have a hard time getting thiers to run for a minute.

Re: Car won't turn off!

This may or may not be relevent.....

I have a '95 Taurus that did the same thing. Started it one day, and heard a crack in the steering column, but it did start. Made my way to wherever I was going and it wouldn't turn back off.
One clue was that the key had no distinct positions anymore, like off, run, acc. It just feely swung from one position to the other.
It turned out that there is a plastic rod that run from the key cylinder down to the actual ignition switch. That rod has a u-joint in it, to account for the tilt steering, and had broke. It's probably impossible to repair it yourself, and was for me too. I ended up going to the junkyard and getting another column from another car and installing it instead. I swapped over the clock-spring, brake interlock, and key cylinder.

This is pretty much what they did for the van. I just had it repaired it was about 220 dollars, they had to replace the coloum as well. Some stupid piece broke because of awesome ford engineers using aluminum rather then steel.
