89, 535i Mystery cable

I was cleaning my recently purchased 89 535i and i noticed that down on the carpet, right inbetween the driver door and seat (only about an inch) there is a cable. I can't really trace it, theres not enough room to see where it leads to. I pull on it and nothing happens at all, it just very slowly retracts back. Its exactly where a fuel door lever would go on another car. I have no idea what this cable is! Any ideas? Oh and also, does my steering wheel have a tilt? It seems odd that BMW would over look this, or maybe I'm missing the obvious... hmm...

I can't help you with the mystery cable question, but I can tell you that you don't have a tilt steering wheel. In my 1990 535i Owners manual it says that all cars with drivers side airbags don't tilt. I guess it would somehow mess up the airbag?

It sounds like the shoulder belt adjuster cable. As the seat moves fore and aft, the shoulder belt moves up and down. No tilt in my car either, it does have an airbag. I remember reading somewhere that at the time time they didn't do tilt and airbags together. Something about the structural integrity of the u-joint under impact.
