Re: sandpaper

Nope . . . A grit is a grit, is a grit . . .

Even the "Micro" polishing systems are available to full size autobody shops and they're a whole lot cheaper too! With the kits offered you usually get a 3X4 mesh, with the full size you get a complete 8 inch disk!

Re: sandpaper

Well there it two ways to look at that question. Firstly there is nothing special about a particular sandpaper that makes it exclusive to scale modelling, an abrasive is an abrasive. Don't be suckered into paying extra because it is "hobby sandpaper".
However there are a lot of different constructions available, paper backing, wet and dry, cloth backed, padded, etc. All will be different - it just comes down to personal preference and value for money.

Re: Re: sandpaper

RR's right there! Don't get suckered in to one brand . . . Try 'em all and see what works best for you and your budget.

In my opinion though, you can't beat the cloth backed wet/dry systems. They conform very well and will last for years (so long as you take good care of them)!

Re: Re: sandpaper

Prolly not . . .

Best to try a well stocked auto parts store. One that specializes in auto refinishing. Usually if they do, they'll have a separate section just for mixing large quantities of paint and not just a rack of rattle cans. You can look in the phone book for such things as PPG dealers. PPG and Dupont to name a few, often have little "Chain stores" within specific auto parts stores.

here someone made custom cans of you choice, also with mixing custom colors

but my question is: know someone translation tablet to grit from micron
I bought several great sheets with sintethyc back (good as wet) and "grit" are from 1 to 30 micron for 1 set (finishing) and from30 to 100 in other.
thanx
(are micromesh in micron 1/1000 mm?)

Re: sandpaper

Giovanni, Micro-mesh have a conversion chart on their website that might help answer your question.

thanks a lot Phil it's really helpful
my isn't micro-mesh (astromodel) but in those chart appear a "micron" column
so my finest (every alu oxide) should be a 24000=1micron
finally! I search a lot for that

Re: sandpaper

I thought 12 thousand grit was smooth, at twice that 24 thousand must be like glass itself. Do you need to use polishing compound after it?

is just what I have, don't use it: really I don't love to use too much sandpaper: only during primer preparation or with Ts13 due to the fact I don't perform wetcoat in order to protect decals but 3-4 damp layers after mists, anyway I have these set:
1-5-12-15-30 micron, so should be equal to 24k/4k/2k ecc: too wide the difference by 1st and2nd, 4k micromesh should leave some little scratch, hard to clear with compound, I prefere just a long polishing with compound

I ask and search for years for this micron/grit conversion, also to follow those master's tutorials, and like sometime happen, casually someome give me on other topics: so thanks another and last time
