My 97 GP runs for 7 seconds then shuts off.

I replaced the crank sensor and that didnt fix the problem. The mechanic is getting error code "P1629" and states that it has to do with the anti-theft device. He had a lock-smith take a look, he stated that the key doesn't have a "chip" in it. When I look at the key, there is no visible chip. It's just a plain key with a black plastic head on it. I've seen keys with the chips before, the chip is in the middle of the key. This one has no visible chip in the key. Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks for any help you can give.

yep, sounds like a key not being recognized by the security system.

DTC P1629 Theft Deterrent Fuel Enable Signal Not Received
The PASS-Key® II module produces the Theft Deterrent Fuel Enable signal when the ignition is ON and the proper key resistor pellet is sensed by the PASS-Key® II module. The PCM monitors the Fuel Enable signal during crank. If the proper signal is present on the Theft Deterrent Fuel Enable circuit, the PCM enables fuel delivery to allow the engine to start. If the PCM detects that the fuel enable signal is not present or incorrect while an attempt is made to start the engine, DTC P1629 will set. The engine will not start as long as this condition is present. If the problem also affects inputs to the PASS-Key® II module, the starter motor may be disabled

Since the engine will start and run for a few seconds, this is telling me that the TD is reconizing a theft attempt and disabling fuel.
There are some involved diagnostics with this system

I called the dealer and gave them my VIN and they stated that there was no chip or security in the key. I had a lock smith take a look and he said the same thing. The key is a plain key with a black plastic head. Would the chip be visible?

The question is have you tried the key relearn? You can eliminate some questions by doing that. Does your "SECURITY" light flash after the car shuts down?? Answer these questions......

Thanks for the help. It turned out to be the module. I had that replaced and the car is fine. The stereo is LOC now, but I've seen several posts on that issue. I'll try some of those procedures as well.

Thanks again for the help!

Hi, I have a '97 GTP with the same symtoms. Starts and runs for 5 to 10 seconds and shuts off. Could you be more specific as to which module was causing your problem.
This car is setting no codes and has no "chip in the key". Fuel pump runs fine (plenty of pressure). I'm looking at replacing the crank position sensor next.
Your response could save me lots of trouble.
Thanks
