missing monte carlo

I have a 96 monte carlo. I would step on the gas and it just sputters and wont excellerate at all. I had to let off and excelerate slowly. Now i replaced the plug wires...did the plugs about 2 yrs ago and they looked ok. and that seemed to help but i still dont have great excelleration and between 50 and 70 if i step on it hard it will do that same thing. The warning light has come on if i stay on the gas to long with it missing and it said the number 4 cylinder was misfiring. I have been putting in fuel injector cleaner every oil change but that does not help. Any suggestions( please let them be cheap solutions .

It sounds like it could be in the ignition. Try pulling the plugs out and make sure the gap is proper - too much gap and it will miss on acceleration. Also, it could be a bad coil. You can check this by pulling one plug wire off the coil block at a time, while the engine is running, and seeing if it runs rougher or not. If this does not help, then you could have a plugged injector. If a prior diagnosis indicated a problem with #4 cylinder, you could try another injector; salvage yards have lots of them - cheap.
